Unveiling the Hidden Risks of Aspartame

### Understanding Aspartame: What It Is and Why to Avoid It

You’ll find aspartame in many products, from chewing gum and sodas to various foods. But what exactly is aspartame, and why should you think twice before consuming it?

#### What is Aspartame?

Aspartame is a type of artificial sweetener used in products like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. Discovered by chemist James Schlatter in 1965 while testing an anti-cancer drug at G.D. Searle Company, aspartame was first approved for dry goods in 1974, though its use was paused for further investigation. It was finally approved for all dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983.

Aspartame is composed of three chemicals: phenylalanine, methanol, and aspartic acid. Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, a neurosurgery professor at the Medical University of Mississippi, has warned that these chemicals can have severe health impacts. According to him, they act as “excitotoxins,” which overstimulate neural cells to the point where they can die.

When products with aspartame are heated above 86 degrees Fahrenheit, they release free methanol. In the body, methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde, a harmful neurotoxin. Methanol itself is toxic, and a liter of aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of it. Symptoms of methanol poisoning can include headaches, ear buzzing, nausea, digestive issues, chills, numbness, vision problems, and neuritis.

#### The Risks of Aspartame

Aspartame accounts for roughly 75% of reported negative reactions to food additives received by the FDA. Some of these adverse reactions include:

– Headaches and migraines
– Muscle spasms
– Seizures
– Breathing difficulties
– Slurred speech
– Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
– Weight gain

Besides these reactions, aspartame can worsen conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, and fibromyalgia.

#### Opt for Natural Alternatives

To avoid the risks associated with aspartame, steer clear of products containing it, as well as those labeled NutraSweet or other similar names. This means cutting out most diet sodas and numerous other diet foods, including some candies and gums. Using real sugar is actually a safer option compared to aspartame.

Instead, consider natural sweeteners like stevia, xylitol, or honey, which are much safer and more effective. In my opinion, products with aspartame shouldn’t even be on store shelves, given that better and safer alternatives are available.

Always check food labels before buying pre-packaged items. It might mean giving up some of your favorite foods, but your long-term health is well worth it.
