Unwavering Determination
Sticking to fitness routines can be really tough. So, what can we do to make it easier?
As a coach, I use techniques from NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and Transactional Analysis to help people keep their exercise promises. One method I’ve developed is called ‘Parts Dialogue.’ It’s a cool way to understand your inner conflict about working out.
Here’s how it works: Sit quietly and imagine each of your hands represents a different point of view. One hand is the part of you that wants to exercise, and the other is the part resisting it. Let’s say the fitness-lover hand speaks first. It might come off as pretty strict, saying things like, “Why can’t you stick to things?”
Then, let the other hand respond. This might be your rebellious side, sounding irritated or defensive. It could say, “I just don’t want to do this!” or, “You’re always nagging me…”
After letting both sides speak their minds, find a compromise between them. Your fitness-enthusiast side might agree on a more reasonable exercise plan, while the rebellious side agrees to at least try something. The point is to create a middle ground where both sides feel heard and respected.
Eventually, if you stick with this, exercising can become a habit. You’ve probably heard that forming a habit takes 21 days. While that’s a good general guideline, it can actually vary. Don’t stress if it takes you longer.
The main reason people struggle to keep up with fitness routines is this kind of inner conflict, often without even realizing it. Though it might feel a bit odd at first, this technique really helps manage and resolve such conflicts. One of the great things about NLP is its practical approach: if something works, use it. Give this method a try – it works!
