Combat Colds and Flu with Natural Remedies

Combat Colds and Flu with Natural Remedies

The last two months of the year are filled with celebrations like Thanksgiving, Christmas (or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa), and New Year’s. Unfortunately, these festive months can also bring colds, the flu, bronchitis, and infections. But don’t let these illnesses ruin your holiday cheer. Even better, you might not need to rely on prescription or over-the-counter drugs to feel better. Here are a few natural remedies that might help.

Before using any of these treatments, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor or health provider.

**Mustard**
Mustard can help with chest congestion from colds and the flu. Make a paste using warm water, one tablespoon of dry mustard, and four tablespoons of flour (add just enough water to keep it a little runny). Spread this paste on a piece of cloth, cover it with another cloth, lie down, and place it on your chest. Make sure the cloth is thick enough that the mustard paste doesn’t seep through. If you feel any burning or discomfort, remove the cloth.

**Ginger**
Ginger can help clear mucus from your respiratory system. Steep half a teaspoon of ginger in one cup of boiling water to make a tea. For extra flavor, add some cinnamon, which also acts as a natural expectorant and aids digestion. Ginger tea can also soothe a sore throat. Add some lemon to enhance this benefit.

**Onions**
Onions are great expectorants and can help kill off viruses and bacteria. If you don’t like eating raw onion, chop it up and mix with a little honey. Alternatively, boil an onion in water, let it cool, remove the onion, and drink the water with a teaspoon of honey. This can also soothe a sore throat. Making onion soup with oregano and garlic is another effective remedy.

**Almonds**
Almonds are high in magnesium, which is effective for treating respiratory issues like asthma and bronchitis. You can eat them as they are, use sweet almond oil as a salad dressing substitute, or drink almond milk. Making your own almond milk is simple. Soak skinned almonds in water overnight. The next day, strain the water, blend the almonds with fresh water until smooth, strain the mixture, and drink. Homemade almond milk lasts up to four days in the fridge.

**Bay Leaf**
Sweet bay leaves can also help with respiratory illnesses. Make a tea by tearing a leaf and steeping it in boiling water. You can also grind the leaves and add them to soup or stew. Just don’t eat the leaves whole; they can cut the inside of your mouth and throat.

There are other small actions you can take to feel better during this season. The steam from a hot shower can help with nasal congestion, and drinking warm liquids while sleeping with your upper body slightly elevated can also clear nasal passages. These simple, natural treatments can help you stay healthy and enjoy celebrating the holidays with your loved ones.
